The Pan-European Picnic Memorial Site commemorates one of the most significant events leading to the end of the Cold War.
On 19 August 1989, the Hungarian Democratic Forum of Debrecen and the Sopron Opposition Round Table organized the Pan-European Picnic to promote the vision of a united Europe without borders and to symbolically demonstrate the dismantling of the Iron Curtain.
The event became a historic milestone when hundreds of East German citizens crossed the temporarily opened border into Austria, making the memorial site an important symbol of freedom, European unity and peaceful political change.
